Memorial Day Weekend

We like to kick off the summer Memorial Day Weekend, with a trip to the family cabin at Hume lake. Last year we missed our first trip because we were in Alaska so, this year I was ready to get up there.
Hume lake is a wonderful place to get away. We are blessed to have this little retreat close to home and free for our use. We are enjoying it more now that the kids are getting older because even though they take up more space in the 900 sq ft cabin they are happy to be out side in the dirt and I am happy to be in the pine fresh air.
Last week a heat wave hit the valley and temperatures spike above 100 so I was surprised at the sudden and drastic cool down. I checked the forecast before we left but, it didn’t really sink in. The forecast called for a high of 48 and chances of showers. I packed for cooler weather but, not quite cool enough as I would come to find out.
We drove up after Joshua finished work Friday night and arrive about 8pm. Being that this is the first weekend anyone stays at the cabin Joshua had to do a cabin check and collect all the dead spider carouses, from the bug bomb his parents set off a few weeks ago. Once the cabin was ready for the kids and I we tried to figure out how to turn on the heater. This isn’t a hard task but, in our four years at the cabin we have not had to use the thing. We ended up calling Joshua’s brother Danny for assistance, and at about 3am we had heat
We ate a quick dinner of grilled cheese and grapes, let the kids play a bit and they were off to bed. For the first time ever we put the kids to bed at the same time, in the same room and they did great. I probably helped that they were exhausted but, I was expecting bed time to take a long time or be forced to put one of the kids in our room {there are only 2 bed rooms in the cabin}
Once they were down I made us some tea because we were freezing, we talked a bit and once it was safe to talk normally we pulled out the book we are reading {Conicals of Narnia, the Magicians Nephew}
The kids woke early about 6ish and Joshua took them down stairs and let me sleep {he’s the best} then about seven he and the kids wake me with a breakfast burrito and coffee. See I told you he’s the best
We hung out around the cabin for a bit, Joshua and the kids played some video games and cabin toys while I watched, read a magazine, and walked around the deck. About 8ish I needed out of the cabin so we took the kids down to the lake with every intention on going on a little nature walk. Before we left Joshua had to find shoes to wear because he only had the flip flops he wore up and they just wouldn’t do in the cold. Luckily there were a pair of shoes that fit him at the cabin.
We start out short walk from the car across the lawn and my shoes are wet, my socks were wet because I am wearing my old running shoes with the air vents in the top
and I am cold from the wind and light rain. So I am a wuss. I am not normally a wuss but, when ill prepared and coming from a recent heat wave the wussy in me comes out. We were at the lake long enough for me to snap a few pick of Joshua and the kids and then back to the cabin we went.
Once back at the cabin we didn’t know what to do for the rest of the day. The cabin is wonderful and we love it but, we need to be able to be outside with the kids so we {I} don’t go nuts. So we decided to head home early.
I am bummed that we needed to leave because I am a nutty wuss but, we will be heading back up 4th of July weekend. The weather will be nice and warm and we can enjoy fishing, swimming, walking around the lake and going out on the boat.
