looking around

Heading out on our family fossil hunt last weekend was a fun chance for me just to take photo’s of the things that caught my eye. I like to incorporate these images into my people shots but today I thought these would be fun just on their own.

me and my girl

Emily’s shots are on the left. My shots are on the right.

Emily shot with Canon 20D & 85mm 1.8. I shot with Canon 5D 50mm 1.2.

This was fun. I enjoyed watching and photographing my girl as she took photo’s. When we were headed out of the house I decided since I was going on this little adventure with the plan of taking photo’s that I’d offer Emily the opportunity to take my old 20D along. She has had the opportunity one before but, for the most part I forget about that camera because it’s tucked away in my box of mostly unused equipment. Since she loves the opportunity for bigger girl responsibilities and the chance to be like mom I know she’d eat up this opportunity. We talked a bit about her responsibility to take care with the camera and my lens. I know it’s not a pro lens but, it’s the only 85mm I have and even though the camera is older and unused it still works nicely…Pretty much these are NOT toys. I gave her a few rules: 1.Always keep the strap around your neck. I keep my strap wrapped around my wrist and I could see her trying to do the same thing. 2. Keep the lens hood on. Again I don’t do this but,  I wanted the lens to be protected for her sake as much as possible. 3.When you want to take a photo, stop walking. 4. Support the camera by the body and not by the lens. Just a few little lessons some for the sake of my camera and lens and others for good photo’s. I decided to set her up in P mode. I wanted her photo’s to be as consistent as possible with zero effort on her part. Thankfully our lighting was great for this. P mode is program exposure, this lets the camera select the aperture and the shutter speed.I set the ISO to 200, set the exposure meter to over expose just a little (just how I like it), made sure it was in jpeg, fixed the focal point to the center and off she went.
